DJI Mini 4 Pro Review: Everything, Under 250 Grams

Almost every drone decision comes down to one number, and it is not the camera resolution. It is 250 grams. Below that line, most countries treat you as a hobbyist with a toy. Above it, you enter a world of registration, remote identification, competency tests and airspace paperwork that is entirely reasonable and entirely tedious.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro exists to sit just under that line while giving up almost nothing. At 249 grams it carries omnidirectional obstacle sensing, a 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K at 60fps in HDR and subject tracking that works — a specification that would have been a flagship two generations ago, in a body lighter than a can of drink. This review is about what that compromise actually costs you in the air.
Why the weight class matters more than the camera
Drone regulation almost everywhere is banded by mass, and 250 grams is the most common first threshold. Staying underneath it typically means lighter registration requirements for recreational flying, fewer restrictions on flying near people, and a much shorter path from unboxing to legally airborne.
What it does not mean is that no rules apply. Sub-250g aircraft are still subject to airspace restrictions, altitude limits, line-of-sight requirements and privacy law, and flying commercially — anything where the footage is part of paid work — brings its own certification requirements in most countries regardless of weight. Rules also differ meaningfully between the US, UK and EU. Check your own national regulator before the first flight, not after.
The detail that catches people out: the larger Intelligent Flight Battery Plus, which extends rated flight time substantially, pushes the aircraft over 250 grams. Buy it if you want the endurance, but understand that fitting it changes which regulatory band you are flying in. Many owners keep standard batteries for casual flights and the Plus for planned shoots.
The types of drone, and where this one sits
Toy and beginner drones — under about £150, no meaningful stabilisation, cameras that are effectively decoration. Fine for learning to fly, useless for footage.
Sub-250g camera drones — this category. Real sensors, real stabilisation, real transmission range, deliberately engineered to stay under the threshold. The Mini 4 Pro is the most capable example.
Prosumer folding drones — the Air and Mavic lines. Bigger sensors, better low light, longer range, more wind resistance, and every regulatory obligation that comes with mass.
FPV and cinewhoops — a completely different discipline, flown through goggles, for dynamic shots that no autonomous drone can produce. Steep learning curve, high crash rate.
What the Mini 4 Pro actually gives you
Omnidirectional obstacle sensing. This is the headline and it deserves to be. Earlier Mini models sensed in some directions and not others, which meant the drone could confidently avoid a tree in front and fly sideways into a lamp post. Full coverage, with the avoidance system calculating routes in real time, is the difference between a drone you trust and one you watch nervously.
ActiveTrack 360°. Subject tracking where you draw the path you want the drone to take around the subject. It works well enough that a solo creator can produce orbiting, following shots that used to need a second operator.
True Vertical Shooting. The camera rotates to shoot properly vertical footage rather than cropping a horizontal frame. If any part of your output is short-form vertical video, this alone is worth a generation of upgrade.
The camera. A 1/1.3-inch sensor with 48MP stills, 4K/60 in HDR, and slow motion up to 100fps at 4K. Dual native ISO handles mixed lighting well. It is not a Mavic-class sensor and it shows after sunset, but in daylight the gap is much smaller than the price difference suggests.
Flight time, honestly
DJI rates the standard battery at 34 minutes. That figure comes from hovering in still air, which is not a thing anyone does. Flying normally — moving, repositioning, fighting a bit of wind, landing with a safe reserve — you should plan around 25 to 28 minutes. The Plus battery’s 45-minute rating works out around 35 to 38 on the same basis.
This is not DJI being dishonest so much as an industry-standard test that has drifted from reality. Every manufacturer quotes the same way. The practical takeaway is simple: buy the multi-battery bundle. A single battery makes for a frustrating afternoon.
Where it struggles
Wind. Physics is not negotiable. A 249-gram aircraft has less authority against gusts than a heavier one, and while the Mini 4 Pro holds position better than its weight suggests, there are days where a Mavic flies and this does not.
Low light. The sensor is good for its class and still small. After dusk, noise appears well before it would on a larger drone.
Obstacle sensing has blind spots for thin objects. Branches, wires and cables are the classic failure. Sensing is excellent at trees and walls, less reliable at a power line against a bright sky. Fly as though it does not exist when wires are around.

That last row is there on purpose. A surprising number of people buy a drone when what they actually wanted was an action camera — the footage they had in mind was close, fast and physical rather than high and sweeping. Worth an honest minute before spending drone money.
Who it is for
Travelling creators. The strongest case. It packs into a small bag, it does not trigger the heavier regulatory tier in most places, and the footage cuts alongside professional material without apology.
Property, events and small commercial work. With appropriate certification for commercial flight, the image quality is comfortably sufficient for listings, venues and promotional edits.
Nervous first-time buyers. Omnidirectional sensing turns the most expensive beginner mistake — flying into something — into a near miss. That is worth real money.
It is the wrong drone if you fly regularly in wind, shoot mostly at dusk, or need the largest possible sensor. In all three cases spend more and accept the paperwork.
