Frequently asked questions

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are snippets of HTML in a page’s head section that describe the page to search engines and browsers — most importantly the title tag and meta description shown in search results.

How long should a title tag be?

Keep it under about 60 characters so Google displays it in full. Put your main keyword near the start.

How long should a meta description be?

Aim for 120–160 characters. Longer descriptions get cut off in search results.

Do meta tags improve rankings?

The title tag is a ranking factor, and a compelling description improves click-through rate, which helps overall SEO performance.

Is this meta tag generator free?

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, and your data never leaves your browser.

Google rewrites titles, and that is fine

Around a third to a half of the time, Google shows something other than your title tag — usually pulling from your H1 or from text on the page. It does this when it judges your title too long, too repetitive, keyword-stuffed, or a poor match for the query.

You cannot force it. What you can do is make your title the obviously best option: accurate, specific, and short enough not to need trimming. Titles get rewritten most often when they are boilerplate, so a template like Keyword | Keyword | Brand is asking to be replaced.

Meta descriptions do not rank, but they do decide clicks

Description text is not a ranking factor and has not been for many years. It is advertising copy for a search result, and click-through is a real effect.

Write it as a reason to choose your result over the nine others: what the reader gets, why it is different, any specific detail that proves you know the subject. Around 155 characters before truncation, and the useful part should sit at the front.

Tags that still matter, and tags that never did

Worth setting: title, description, canonical, viewport, charset, and Open Graph for how links look when shared.

Situational: robots, when you need to control indexing on a specific page.

Ignored by every major engine: meta keywords. Google stopped using it in 2009. Filling it in does no harm and no good, and tools that make a feature of it are quietly out of date.

Canonical tags prevent a problem you may already have

If the same content is reachable at several URLs — with and without a trailing slash, with tracking parameters, under two categories — a canonical tag tells Google which one counts. Without it, ranking signals get split across the duplicates.

Point the canonical at the version you want to rank, and make sure it is absolute rather than relative. A self-referencing canonical on every page is a sensible default.

One title, one page

Duplicate titles across pages are one of the most common findings in any site audit. If two pages share a title, either they are duplicates and one should be merged away, or they are different and the titles should say how.

Pair this with the Open Graph generator for social previews, the title generator for headline options, and text to slug for the URL.
