Static and dynamic QR codes are different products
A static code encodes the destination directly into the pattern. It never expires, needs no account and no service behind it — but the destination cannot be changed once printed. This tool makes static codes.
A dynamic code encodes a short redirect URL owned by a provider. That lets you change the destination later and track scans, and it means the code stops working if you stop paying or the provider disappears. Plenty of businesses have discovered this after printing thousands of menus.
For anything printed and permanent — packaging, signage, business cards, book covers — static is the safer choice.
Error correction: why a damaged code still scans
QR codes carry redundant data at four levels: L recovers about 7% damage, M about 15%, Q 25% and H 30%. Higher correction means a denser pattern for the same content.
Use M for screens and clean print. Use Q or H for anything that will be handled, weathered, or printed over a logo — the redundancy is what lets a code survive a scratched sticker or a coffee ring.
Size, contrast and the quiet zone
Three physical rules decide whether a code scans reliably:
- Minimum size — about 2 × 2 cm for a code scanned at arm’s length. Roughly a tenth of the scanning distance is the rule of thumb.
- The quiet zone — clear margin of at least four modules around the code. Codes fail more often from being crowded than from being small.
- Contrast and polarity — dark pattern on light background. Inverted codes fail on many older scanners, so pale-on-dark looks smart and scans badly.
Keep the URL short
More characters means a denser grid, and a dense grid needs to be printed larger to stay readable. A long tracking URL with campaign parameters can double the module count.

Test before you print a thousand
Scan the final artwork — not the screen version — with at least two different phones, one iPhone and one Android, in the lighting where it will actually be used. Print a single proof at real size first. A code that fails is worse than no code, because people try, fail, and blame the business.
