OLED monitors solved a problem that had been quietly ruining PC gaming for twenty years: the black level. Every LCD ever made lights its pixels from behind, so black is really dark grey with a lamp behind it. In a dark room, playing anything with a night scene, you can see the whole panel glowing faintly. OLED pixels simply switch off, and the first time you see it the difference is not subtle.

The UltraGear 27-inch is LG’s answer at the size most people actually want. It is also a monitor with two genuine caveats that reviews tend to bury near the end, and both of them matter more if this will be your only screen rather than your gaming one. This review puts them near the front.

Why OLED changed monitors and not just televisions

Televisions got OLED first and the benefit was obvious: films are watched in dark rooms and are full of dark scenes. Monitors took longer, and the reason is instructive.

A television shows moving images. A monitor shows a taskbar, a set of desktop icons, a browser with the same navigation bar in the same place, and an editor with the same panels, for eight hours a day, every day. Static content is exactly what organic pixels do not like, and that tension is why OLED monitors arrived late and why the warnings around them are real rather than theatrical.

The honest framing: this is a spectacular gaming monitor and a compromised work monitor. Caveat one: text rendering

This panel uses a WOLED structure, and its subpixel layout is not the standard red-green-blue arrangement that Windows and macOS assume when they smooth text. The practical result is colour fringing on small text — thin coloured edges around letters, most visible on white backgrounds at normal reading sizes.

How much this bothers you is genuinely personal. Some people never notice. Others cannot unsee it and find it fatiguing after a few hours. It is not a defect and it cannot be fully fixed in software, though font smoothing settings help and larger text sizes help more.

The reason to raise it first rather than last is that it is the single most common cause of people returning an OLED monitor. If you spend your day in documents and code, find one in a shop and look at a page of text before ordering.

Caveat two: brightness and burn-in

Full-screen brightness sits around 275 nits, which is fine in a normally lit room and modest next to a bright LCD. In SDR it looks excellent. In HDR the effect is less dramatic than the specification implies, because OLED delivers stunning contrast through darkness rather than through peak brightness. In a sunlit room, a bright LCD will look better; in a dim one, this is not close.

Burn-in is the other one. Modern panels include several mitigations — pixel shifting, logo dimming, periodic compensation cycles that run when you turn the monitor off — and they work well enough that reported failures have become uncommon rather than routine. But the risk is not zero and it is concentrated exactly where your work lives: taskbars, docks, persistent UI panels.

Practical habits that materially reduce it: auto-hide the taskbar, set a short screen blank timeout, avoid leaving a static image up for hours, and let the compensation cycle finish rather than pulling the power. What it is like to actually game on

Extremely good, and the two specifications that matter combine rather than compete. 240 Hz gives you the frame rate; 0.03 ms means those frames are actually distinct rather than smeared into each other. Plenty of fast LCDs advertise high refresh rates and then blur in dark scenes because the pixels cannot transition quickly enough. This does not.

Both HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 reach the full refresh rate, which is worth knowing because it means a console and a PC can both be connected without one of them being handicapped. Variable refresh rate works with both AMD and NVIDIA hardware.

QHD at 27 inches is also the right pairing. It is sharp enough at normal viewing distance without demanding the graphics hardware that 4K at high refresh rates requires — which matters, because 240 Hz is only useful if your machine can produce frames at something approaching that rate. Pairing this with a mid-range graphics card is a slight waste of the panel.

Two revisions, and which you are buying

LG has sold more than one 27-inch UltraGear OLED at these specifications — an original and a later revision with refinements to brightness handling and HDR certification. They look nearly identical on a listing and the model numbers differ by a letter.

Console players, since HDMI 2.1 at full bandwidth means a current console drives it properly, and consoles show less static content than a desktop does.
