How AI detectors actually work
They do not recognise AI writing. They measure two statistical properties of text and infer from them.
Perplexity is how surprising the word choices are. Language models pick likely next words, so their output tends to be less surprising than human writing. Burstiness is how much sentence length and structure vary. People write a long winding sentence, then a short one. Models tend toward uniformity.
Low perplexity plus low burstiness produces a high “AI” score. That is the whole mechanism — which is why the results should be read as a signal, not a verdict.
Why false positives happen constantly
Any writing that is deliberately clear and consistent scores as machine-made, because clarity and consistency are exactly what the metrics measure.
The groups most often flagged wrongly: non-native English speakers, who tend toward simpler and more predictable constructions; technical writers, whose job is to be unambiguous; students following a taught structure; and anyone writing formal documentation, where varied phrasing would be a fault rather than a virtue.
The reverse also holds. AI output that has been edited by a person, or written from a detailed prompt asking for varied sentence length, routinely scores as human.
What a score means, and what it does not
A percentage looks precise and is not. It is a confidence estimate from a model that has no access to the truth — it never saw the text being written.
Never use a detector score as evidence of misconduct. There is no threshold at which a score becomes proof, and accusing someone on the basis of one is both unfair and, given the false-positive rate on non-native writing, discriminatory in practice.
Better questions than “is this AI?”
If you are assessing content, these tell you far more:
- Does it contain anything specific — a number, a name, a date, a first-hand detail?
- Does it cite sources, and do those sources exist and say what is claimed?
- Is anything in it wrong? Fabricated detail is a far stronger signal than sentence rhythm.
- Does it take a position, or does it carefully avoid saying anything?
Google’s own guidance is not about how content was produced but whether it is useful and demonstrably knowledgeable. That is the standard worth writing to, and it is the one this site tries to meet.
