Runway Review: The Best AI Video Tool Is Still a Demanding One
Gen-4's reference images finally make short narrative work possible. The real limitation is not the model, it is that credits are spent per attempt rather than per usable clip.

AI video is at the stage AI images were at about three years ago: astonishing in demos, frustrating in production, and improving fast enough that any confident statement about its limits has a short shelf life. Runway has been at the front of it longer than almost anyone, and Gen-4 is the first generation where the output holds together well enough that people are quietly using it in paid work rather than just posting it.
The catch is that it is genuinely hard to use well and genuinely hard to budget for. This review is about both — what Gen-4 actually does, what the credit system costs in practice, and the gap between what you see on social media and what you get on a Tuesday afternoon.
Why AI video is harder than AI images
Worth understanding, because it explains every limitation that follows.
An image has to be internally consistent once. A video has to be consistent with itself across every frame, and consistent in a way that obeys physics. A hand can be slightly wrong in a still and you might not notice. A hand that changes shape between frames is immediately, viscerally wrong — human vision is extraordinarily good at spotting motion that does not make sense.
On top of that, video is expensive. Every second is many frames, each of which is roughly an image-generation problem, which is why every AI video tool is credit-metered and why clips are short. This is not a business decision to be resented; it is what the work costs.
The consequence for how you should work: AI video rewards short clips, controlled motion and modest ambition. The prompts that produce showreel-quality output are usually asking for one clear thing happening slowly. The prompts that produce mush are asking for a complicated scene with several moving subjects.
What Gen-4 changed
Reference images for consistency. The headline. You can supply a reference and keep a character’s appearance, clothing and features stable across multiple generated scenes. Before this, narrative work meant either accepting that your character changed between shots or doing extensive manual work to hide it. This is the feature that makes short-form storytelling plausible.
Motion and physics. Gen-4 is widely regarded as producing the most cinematically coherent motion available — weight, momentum and lighting behave more like the world than in previous generations. Not perfect, and the failure modes are subtler now: things look right until you watch a specific limb.
A full toolkit rather than one function. Text-to-video, image-to-video, video-to-video, lip sync and upscaling all sit in one browser workspace. Image-to-video is the one most professionals use most — generate or shoot a still you control completely, then animate it. Far more predictable than describing a whole scene in words.
What it costs, and why that is complicated
Runway is credit-based. Plans run from a free tier with a one-time allocation of 125 credits, through a Standard, Pro and Max ladder. Annual billing is roughly 20% cheaper than monthly; the figures below are the annual-equivalent monthly rates as of August 2026.

Monthly billing runs meaningfully higher across the board — roughly $15, $35 and $95 for the three paid tiers. If you are confident you will use it for a year, annual is the obvious choice; if you are not, the monthly premium is the price of finding out.
The genuine budgeting problem is that credits are consumed per generation, not per usable clip, and the ratio between the two is entirely unpredictable. A shot might work on the second attempt or the fifteenth. This makes fixed-price client work risky in a way that hourly work is not, and it is the single most common complaint from professionals.
Where it still falls down
Cost per finished clip is unpredictable. Covered above, and it is the limitation that matters most commercially.
The learning curve is steep. The interface exposes a lot, prompting for video is meaningfully different from prompting for images, and the difference between a good and a bad result is often technique rather than luck. Expect to be bad at this for a few weeks.
Long-form continuity. Individual clips are strong. Stitching many into something that feels like one continuous piece remains hard, and is where most ambitious projects fall apart.
Precise control. If a client needs the camera to move a specific way at a specific moment, you are negotiating with the model rather than directing it. Traditional production still wins outright on anything that must match a storyboard exactly.
Legal and brand review. Commercial use raises questions about training data, likeness and rights that are still unsettled. Any brand-facing work needs that conversation before the work starts, not after.

The most common professional pattern right now is not choosing one. It is using AI video for the shots that would otherwise be impossible or unaffordable, and conventional footage for everything the client will scrutinise.
Who should pay for it
You should, if you make short-form video where atmosphere matters more than accuracy, if you pitch concepts and need animatics that look like the finished thing, or if you produce social content at a volume that makes filming everything impractical.
You should not, if you need predictable per-clip costs, if your work must match an approved storyboard, or if you are hoping to replace a production crew. It is a powerful addition to a workflow and a poor substitute for one.
