Why 20 KB is the size forms ask for most
It is the default limit on a great many government and examination portals — identity applications, board and university registrations, licence renewals. The number is arbitrary in origin: it was a sensible ceiling when these systems were specified, and it has stayed because changing it means changing storage assumptions built up over years.
The result is that millions of people meet the same problem: a modern phone photo is 3–5 MB, and the form wants it 200 times smaller.
Meeting the size and the photo rules together
Most forms that specify 20 KB also specify dimensions and content — often something like 200 × 230 pixels, plain background, face centred. Do those first:
- Crop to the ratio the form requires.
- Resize to the stated pixel dimensions if given.
- Then compress to 20 KB.
Compressing first and cropping afterwards undoes the compression, which is the most common reason people go round this loop repeatedly.
Signatures compress differently from photos
