You email a photo to someone and they cannot open it. You upload one to a job application and the form rejects it. You copy holiday pictures onto a Windows laptop and half of them show as blank icons. The file extension says .HEIC, and nothing you own seems to want it.

This is not a fault with your phone or the file. It is a format that Apple adopted years before the rest of the world caught up, and it catches people out at exactly the moment they need a photo to work.

What HEIC is, and why Apple uses it

HEIC is Apple’s implementation of HEIF — the High Efficiency Image File Format, standardised by MPEG. The images inside are compressed with HEVC, the same codec used for 4K video.

Apple made it the camera default in iOS 11, released in 2017, for one straightforward reason: at the same visual quality it produces roughly half the file size of JPG. On a phone holding fifteen thousand photos, halving the storage is not a marginal gain.

It is also a genuinely more capable format. A single HEIC file can hold multiple images, which is how Live Photos and burst sequences are stored. It carries depth maps for Portrait mode, supports 16-bit colour where JPG manages 8, and stores edits non-destructively so the original survives a crop.

By almost every technical measure it is better than JPG. Which makes the next part more frustrating.

Why nothing else supports it

HEVC, the codec inside, is covered by a large pool of patents held by many companies. Anyone shipping software that decodes it may owe licensing fees, and the licensing landscape has been notoriously tangled — multiple competing patent pools, unclear terms.

That is why Windows does not decode HEIC out of the box: Microsoft ships the extension separately through the Store rather than bundling the cost with every copy of Windows. It is why browser support arrived late and unevenly. And it is why a great many web upload forms, written years ago against a list of formats everyone agreed on, simply do not include it.

The short version. HEIC is technically superior and commercially awkward. JPG is technically dated and universally supported. For anything leaving your phone, universally supported wins.

Where HEIC actually breaks

The pattern is consistent: anywhere a system was built before 2017, or built to a conservative list of accepted formats.

  • Government and job application portals — almost universally JPG and PNG only. This is where most people meet the problem, usually with a deadline.
  • Older Windows PCs — without the HEVC extension, File Explorer shows a blank thumbnail and Photos refuses to open it.
  • Email — the file sends fine; the recipient cannot open it, and often assumes you sent something corrupt.
  • Print services and photo books — most upload flows expect JPG.
  • WordPress and many CMSs — rejected by MIME type at upload.
  • Older Android phones and non-Apple software — support has improved but is far from universal.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

There are four routes, and which is right depends on where the photo currently is.

In your browser

Fastest for a handful of files, and the only method where the photo never leaves your device. On the iPhone itself

Open the photo, tap share, and choose an option that re-encodes it — emailing it to yourself at a reduced size produces a JPG. Clumsy, but it works with nothing installed.

On a Mac

Preview will open HEIC natively. File → Export, choose JPEG. For a batch, select them all in Finder, right-click and use Quick Actions → Convert Image.

On Windows

Install the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store and Windows will open HEIC files directly; you can then Save As JPG from Photos. Note this is a paid extension, which is the licensing issue showing up as a line item.

One point worth understanding: HEIC is already a lossy format, so converting to JPG is a second lossy step. The difference is small enough that nobody will spot it in a normal photo, but it means converting back and forth repeatedly degrades the image each time. Convert once, from the original.

Stopping it happening again

Two settings on the iPhone, and most people know only the first.

Shoot JPG from the start: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Every photo taken from then on is JPG. Files are roughly twice the size, and they work everywhere.

Keep HEIC on the phone but convert on transfer: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic. Photos stay small on the device and arrive as JPG on your computer. For most people this is the better setting — you keep the storage saving and never meet the problem again.

Before you switch everything to JPG. If you shoot a lot and your phone is near full, Most Compatible will fill it noticeably faster. The transfer setting gets you compatibility without the storage cost, which is why it is the one worth changing first.

Questions people ask about HEIC

Is HEIC better quality than JPG?

At the same file size, yes — noticeably. HEVC compression is far more efficient than JPG’s, which dates from 1992. At maximum quality settings the gap narrows and both are visually excellent.

Will converting lose quality?

Slightly, because you are re-encoding lossy data into a different lossy format. At high JPG quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing. Repeated round trips are what to avoid.

Why is my converted file so much bigger?

Because JPG is less efficient. A 2 MB HEIC commonly becomes 4–5 MB as JPG at high quality. If a form has a size limit, run the result through compress to an exact KB size.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead?

You can, and for photographs you should not — PNG is lossless and will produce a file several times larger with no visible benefit. Use PNG only if something specifically demands it. The image converter handles both.

Does converting remove location data?

Not necessarily — EXIF often survives, including GPS coordinates. If you are posting a photo publicly and would rather not publish where it was taken, strip the metadata deliberately rather than assuming conversion did it.

The short version

HEIC is the better format and JPG is the one that works. For photos staying on your phone, leave HEIC alone — it saves real space and loses nothing. For anything you send, upload or print, convert to JPG and stop thinking about it.

And if you would rather never meet the problem again, change the transfer setting rather than the camera setting. You keep the storage saving and the files arrive usable.
